Serving Up Social Justice at Soup for Change 2024

You might be asking why we would care about soup within education. It is because soup has an appeal that transcends boundaries. It is a comfort food that is cherished across many different cultures, brings people together, and is often shared with heartwarming conversations. Through "Soup for Change," our young activists are able to stir up more than just soup; they are able to stir up change by serving bowls of soup and fostering important conversations in unexpected places!

This year, students leveraged their creativity, ingenuity, and passion about topics that are important to them to orchestrate meaningful change in their communities. The topics ranged from food insecurity to cyberbullying, climate change, pollution and so much more! The significance of "Soup for Change" extends far beyond its culinary roots. For youth, it represents a beacon of hope and empowerment in the face of global challenges. CDS students are reclaiming their narrative and standing up for causes with courage and resilience.

Lately, “Soup for Change” has even drawn the attention of the wider community! One of our seventh graders took the initiative to cold-email ABC News, and the staff there were so impressed with the students’ work that they devoted both an article and a TV segment to the event. CDS is in the heart of San Francisco, where innovation and activism converge, and "Soup for Change" stands as a shining example of what's possible when youth are empowered to make a difference. As we go out into the community, our young changemakers hope that they can inspire people to savor not just the flavors of soup but also the opportunity to support and amplify their voices for change.
